The Italy Digital Nomad Visa at the Detroit consulate: what this office actually asks for
Detroit serves five Midwest and Upper South states and mirrors Chicago's strictness on accommodation: hotel stays and hospitality offers are called out as grounds for denial. One nuance in its insurance wording matters, Detroit's published checklist doesn't offer the affidavit alternative that SF and NYC list.

Applying at the wrong consulate doesn't get reviewed, it gets bounced. If you're unsure, check the jurisdiction page on the official Detroit consulate site.

The requirements every US consulate applies
- A qualifying "highly skilled" profession (art. 27-quater, D.Lgs. 286/1998), shown by a degree recognized via CIMEA or a Declaration of Value, a government-licensed profession, or 5+ years of documented professional experience (3 years for ICT managers/specialists).
- Income of at least three times the healthcare-exemption minimum: the official figure on the consulates' published sheets is €24,789/year. That is the threshold you must clear, and documenting a margin above it leaves the officer less room to challenge your file. It must come from the remote work itself: savings, Social Security, rents and stocks don't count.
- 6+ months' experience in the same line of work you'll do from Italy.
- Health insurance ≥ €30,000 (or $50,000) covering medical expenses, hospitalization and repatriation, valid across Italy for the whole stay, as a letter or certificate, never just the card.
- Accommodation in your name for the full visa duration, a registered lease ("Contratto di Locazione ad Uso Abitativo" registered with the Agenzia delle Entrate) or a deed.
- Clean immigration record declaration for the past 5 years.
- Employees (remote-worker stream) add two items: a contract meeting Italian collective-agreement / ISTAT-median salary levels, and an employer letter declaring no convictions under art. 22 comma 5-bis (immigration, labor, minor-exploitation crimes) in the past 5 years.
What's different at Detroit
- Accommodation wording matches Chicago's: hotel stay or third-party hospitality is unacceptable, lease, rental contract or deed in your name or the application is denied.
- If you can't obtain a compliant insurance declaration, Detroit's checklist requires proof of purchased Italian health insurance, it does not list the "affidavit" alternative that SF/NYC accept.
- Income proof: your three most recent paystubs, tax return or W-2, income must come from the remote work itself.
FAQ: Detroit consulate
I live in Nashville or Cincinnati, where do I apply?
Detroit. Its jurisdiction covers Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee.
Does Detroit accept an insurance affidavit like San Francisco does?
Its published checklist doesn't mention that option, if you can't produce a compliant insurance certificate, it asks for proof of purchased Italian coverage. Get the certificate right before the appointment.
What accommodation proof works at Detroit?
Only a lease, rental contract or deed in your name covering the full visa duration, registered with the Agenzia delle Entrate if rented. The checklist states hotel stays and hospitality offers lead to denial.
